Science & Math Informal Learning Experiences

SMILE stands for "Science & Math Informal Learning Experiences".

SMILE is a team of expert media, museum, scientists and education specialists developing ways to spark interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) by offering innovative, engaging, and entertaining outreach programs that make science more accessible to everyone.

The public understanding of science is as critical today as it was in the 1960's when President John F. Kennedy launched a call-to-action to accomplish the seemly impossible goal of a manned-moon landing within 10 years.

This time, the call-to-action is energy and the environment ushering in not only the need for a new generation of scientists working on solutions, but better ways to communicate science. With this in mind, SMILE is working on several initiatives:

Public Learning Experiences

With the help of a team of visual effects designers, SMILE applies the latest in Hollywood imagining technologies, like extreme resolution photography, spherical animation and digital terrain rendering, to help us see our world in new ways.  Visual narratives that incorporate these technologies for interactive journeys will offer the public easy access to insights about our enivironment that are difficult, or even impossible to see in any other way.

At the other end of the storytelling spectrum, SMILE works with education and outreach people to create low-tech, low-cost, high-touch, hands-on programs that engage the whole family.

 Student Learning Experiences

SMILE establishes unique collaborations engaging students to become expert science communicators by applying the power of entertainment and interactive media to complex, real-world science stories in any media format.

SMILE teams the talents of university level media arts students preparing for careers in  cimema, entertainment and communications with researchers and scientists for the purpose of telling little-known stories about national laboratory environmental and energy solutions.
